What does it mean to join BMI?
BMI is a performing rights society that collects royalties from radio, television, the Internet, restaurants, and thousands of other businesses that use music. We do it on behalf of songwriters, composers, and music publishers. In effect, we act as their representative so that they can get on with the business of creating new music while we collect their royalties. If you fill out this application, you are expressing your desire to join BMI. If accepted, you will be signing a legal contract, so take it seriously.
How do I know if I need BMI?
You need BMI if you have written or published songs that have the potential to be used by the kind of businesses we mentioned above. In the age of the Internet, for example, anyone who has written a song posted on a website would qualify to join BMI. If you do not have completed songs or recorded demos, you probably do not need BMI yet.
I am an artist, not a songwriter . . . do I need BMI?
No. BMI only collects royalties on behalf of songwriters and composers. If you are an artist performing someone else's songs, you need a record company, not BMI. If you are writing and performing your own songs, BMI welcomes you.

Exum Recording

In 1979 Scott started his business in Chicago using 8 track analog. In 1987 he added the Sony/MCI JH 2" Analog 24 Track with the Auto Locator III and the Neotek Series II Console and has been working with that ever since. Scott recorded many bands and had much success such as the 4 song demo that got "Stabbing Westward" signed to a major deal with Sony Records. He's worked with the likes of Bernard Purdie, Elliott Randoll (Stealy Dan) and Billy Dickens (Bassist), Blink 182, Unwritten Law, Pivit, Agent 51, Jerry Finn.
In 1994 Scott moved all his equipment to Escondido in southern California and set up with DML Studio. He was the sole engineer there till 1999 when Scott opened up his own business at 629 West 5th Avenue in Escondido. He is currently using Pro Tools HD 3 along with his other gear.
